Originally built by the Dutch in 1652 as Fort Provintia. Later became a symbol of Taiwanese history under different rulers including the Ming loyalist Koxinga.

Founded in 1665, this is the only 'Sidian' (officially recognized by the imperial court) Martial Temple in Taiwan. The red walls and incense-filled corridors have stood for over 350 years.

Over 60 years old, this stall uses a traditional charcoal grill to make toast—a technique rarely seen today. Topped with butter, peanut, or strawberry jam, and filled with a lard-fried egg.

Bawan (肉圓) is a Taiwanese specialty—a soft rice flour dumpling filled with pork, bamboo shoots, and mushrooms. Tainan-style is steamed, not fried like in other cities!

Tainan is famous for its fresh beef soup. The beef is slaughtered the same morning and served raw in hot broth—it cooks right in your bowl! 'Shijingjiu' refers to an ancient stone mortar landmark in this area.

Migao (米糕) is glutinous rice cooked with braised pork sauce. This shop has been serving it for over 50 years. The combination of sticky rice + fish floss + cucumber is uniquely Tainanese.

Almond tofu (杏仁豆腐) is NOT made from almonds—it's made from apricot kernels! It has a delicate, creamy texture. This shop's famous 'Moai' (Easter Island statue) ice brick is a creative twist on traditional desserts.

Four Gods Soup (四神湯) is a traditional Chinese herbal soup made with four medicinal herbs: lotus seeds, euryale seeds, Chinese yam, and poria mushroom. It's been used for centuries to aid digestion.

Mung bean milk (綠豆沙牛奶) is a beloved Taiwanese drink. Mung beans are cooked until soft, blended, then mixed with fresh milk. It's healthy, filling, and uniquely Taiwanese!

This peanut candy stall has been operating for 80+ years! The candy is made by hand—roasting peanuts, cooking maltose syrup, then pressing and cutting. It's a disappearing craft.

Built in 1665, this temple features stunning murals of the '36 Divine Generals'—celestial warriors from Chinese mythology. The black pillars and red beams are traditional Taiwanese temple architecture.

Shaved ice (剉冰) is Taiwan's answer to summer heat. Unlike snow cones, Taiwanese shaved ice uses fine, fluffy ice topped with fresh fruits, red beans, and sweet syrups.

Chuan Mei Theater is one of the last cinemas in Taiwan to use hand-painted movie posters. The artist Yan Jhen-fa has been painting these giant billboards for decades. Director Ang Lee (Life of Pi, Brokeback Mountain) grew up watching movies here!

Bowl cake (碗粿) is steamed savory rice pudding topped with braised pork, mushrooms, and salted egg. Famous director Ang Lee is a fan! The rice used here is aged at least 1.5 years for the perfect texture.

Pig blood soup (豬血湯) might sound scary, but it's a beloved Taiwanese comfort food! The blood is coagulated into firm cubes, then served in a ginger-scented broth. It's rich in iron and has been eaten in Taiwan for generations.
